Designing a Western Nursery Theme

A western nursery theme works well for a baby boy but can also be used for a girl. In fact there are even western girl nursery bedding sets available. When planning a western theme for your baby’s room, you may want to have the room’s design revolve around one or more of the following western themed items:

• Wild Horses
• Cactus
• Cowboy Boots
• Lassos
• Horseshoes
• Wagon Wheels

Western Themed Walls

There are a lot of great ways you can prepare the walls in your western theme nursery. Here are some ideas:

• Pick two colors out of the bedding that compliment each other. Put a chair rail around the room and paint the lighter of the two colors above the rail and the darker below. The chair rail should go about a third of the way up the wall from the floor, so if your nursery has an eight foot ceiling, put the chair rail about 32“-36“ from the floor. Stain or paint the chair rail. If you want, you could also stencil horse shoes on the rail to give it a western motif.
• A western wall border would also work great on the walls. Nursery bedding sets often offer matching wall border. If you use wall border, you can put it around the top of the wall or around the middle. Paint the walls with a color that matches the border and bedding. If you put the border around the middle, paint you could one color above and one below.
• A western themed wall mural would look great on one of the walls. It could be of wild horses or a stage coach in the desert. Another idea is a mural of an Old West town with a Sheriff's Office, General Store, Saloon, Livery, etc. A rodeo scene with cowboys lassoing bucking broncos would work as well.
