Decorating Techiques: Painting
Stripes on the Walls

Painting stripes on the walls of a baby or child’s room is a fun idea. If you want to paint vertical stripes on the wall, begin by deciding what two colors you want to use. You can use more than to colors but two is best since the room may appear too busy with more than a couple colors. Make sure that the colors that you choose compliment each other as well as the décor that you plan to use to decorate the room.

Once, you have decided on your colors, prepare the walls that you plan to paint. Begin by measuring the length of the wall that you paint. Divide to figure out what size stripe will work well on the wall. You want the stripes to come out the same size. For example, if you have a wall that is exactly 144”, 12” stripes will work out perfectly. Take the width of the stripe you plan to use and mark the wall with pencil to measure off where each stripe will go. So if you planned to go with 12” stripes, you would mark the wall off every 12” with pencil. Tape off alternating stripes with painter’s tape. Fill in every other stripe with the first color that you plan to use. Once the paint has dried completely, remove the tape. Carefully tape off the stripes that still have to be painted. Take the second paint color you plan to use and fill in the remaining stripes. When the paint has dried, remove the tape. Repeat the process for each wall. The stripes on each wall should be the same size so measure all the walls before you start and determine what size stripe will work best for your room.

If you do decide to use more than two colors, follow the above directions but paint every third stripe for three colors, every fourth stripe for four colors and so on.

Some color combination ideas for painting stripes on walls:

Yellow and white go well together and are great colors for a gender neutral room. This would be great for a room where two children, a boy and a girl have to share a space. It also works great for a nursery if you are planning to have more children. The room will not require repainting if the next baby is a different gender.

Red and white stripes would be great for a room with a carnival or circus theme to it. Red is a bold color that is attractive to young babies so the red and white contrast may be visually stimulating for them.

Pastel colors also work really well for painting stripes. Find two that compliment each other or pair a pastel color with a white one.

Navy blue and white stripes would look great in a room with a nautical or sail boat theme to it.

Use your imagination, get creative, and have fun when choosing your colors and painting your striped walls. The end result will be a room that you and your child will love.
