Creating an Organic Baby Nursery
Some parents are interested in creating an organic baby nursery for their new baby. What is an organic baby nursery? It is when you try to create a nursery avoiding things that will subject the baby to chemicals.
Synthetically made products can omit VOCs (volatile organic chemicals) into the air for years. To avoid this, you can purchase naturally made items such as baby bedding and furniture for your baby’s nursery to reduce their exposure to chemicals.
Buying Organic Furniture for Baby
There are companies that sell naturally made baby furniture. These pieces are safer for the baby because they are made using non-toxic means and won’t omit gases from the chemicals and glues normally used to make furniture. br>
Choosing an Organic Baby Mattress
Baby mattresses can be purchased that are made with organic cotton, wool, or latex. Because they are made from organic materials, they won’t omit the gases that mattresses made with synthetic materials do.
Organic Baby Bedding
If you want to create an organic baby nursery, then organic bedding will be an important part of it. Be sure to purchase blankets, crib sheets, mattress pad covers, crib skirts and comforters that are made using chemical free cotton.
Try Baby Earth for organic baby bedding, mattresses, and mattress pads. They have a pretty good selection and reasonable prices.
Don’t Forget the Air Purifier
Installing an air purifier in the baby nursery will help remove allergens like dust and pollen from the air. Since your baby will spend much of their time sleeping in their baby nursery, this is a great way to make the air extra clean for them to breath.

Painting the NurseryUse zero or low VOC paints. This are much safer and unlike normal paint, they omit little or no fumes which will make the air in the nursery much safer for the baby to breath.
Choose Wood Floors over Carpet
If you want to plan an organic nursery, you will want to remove carpet and install wood floors that are not treated with chemicals. Carpets omit VOCs and our full of allergens plus they trap dust which causes dust mites. If you have your heart set on carpet for the nursery, you can purchase untreated carpet or area rugs which are free of dyes, pesticides, and stain protectors.
The Disadvantage to Creating an Organic Baby Nursery
Creating an organic baby nursery can cost a lot more. If you can’t afford to buy organically made furniture, baby bedding, and mattresses for your new baby’s room, don’t feel bad. I bought a $100 crib and $40 mattress for my son’s nursery when he was born because I didn’t know any different and even if I had, my husband and I wouldn’t have been able to shell out hundreds more to buy a organic crib, bedding, and mattress. There are some inexpensive measures you can take though, if you are still interested in creating a more chemical free nursery for your baby. Consider buying older baby furniture from a baby consignment store or garage sale. They will omit less gases because they are older. If you do purchase a used crib, make sure it meets today’s crib safety standards and doesn't have lead paint.
