Suggestions for Baby Proofing your Nursery
Here are some suggestions to help you begin the process of baby proofing your nursery:
1. Make sure that mini blind cords are out of reach of the baby. Avoid putting the crib near a window and use a cord wind-up device or a bracket to secure the extra cords from the blinds.
2. Keep all furniture away from the window so when the baby starts climbing, they are not able to climb up and potentially fall out of the window. Also make sure that the window is securely latched.
3. When baby proofing the nursery, be sure to install electrical plug covers on all electrical outlets that you are not using in the baby’s nursery.
4. Install a smoke detector in the baby’s nursery and be sure to change it’s batteries every six months.
5. Anchoring any heavy furniture to a wall with furniture safety brackets is an important part of the baby proofing process. Bookcases and dressers especially are a potential hazard when the baby starts to climb.
6. If you use a vaporizer, make sure it is up high so that the baby doesn’t get burned by the steam. If you don’t have a safe place to put it, consider using a humidifier instead of a vaporizer.
7. If your house was built before 1978, make sure that the walls aren’t painted with lead paint. If you aren’t sure, you can buy a test kit at your local home improvement store or hire a trained professional to come in and test the paint. If you have lead paint, it is important to take the proper precautions to seal and cover over it or remove it. Lead dust and chips from peeling paint can be dangerous to babies and children.
8. Don’t hang shelves, artwork, or wall hangings directly above the crib. They are a potential hazard to the baby if they fall or are pulled off the wall.
9. If you use bumper guards on the crib, make sure to remove them once the baby is able to stand. This will prevent them from falling out of the crib.
