Preparing the Baby Nursery Walls

Deciding on Paint Colors for Your Nursery Walls

It is best to hold off on choosing the paint colors for the nursery until you have settled on a theme for the room.
Traditionally nurseries for boys were blue and nurseries for girls were pink. Green and yellow are neutral colors that will work great for either gender and make it easy for you to reuse the nursery for the next baby with out having to repaint it. Don’t feel that you have to be limited to these traditional paint colors though. Once you choose the theme you want to go with, you could pick out nursery paint colors that compliment the bedding and decor you plan to use in the room. Another option is to paint the wall with vibrant shades of red, blue, or yellow which are colors that stimulate the baby. Painting stripes on the wall in alternating colors is another great idea.

Wallpaper, Borders, and Murals

Painting is not your only option for your nursery room walls. You could put a wallpaper up that matches or compliments your theme. Most nursery bedding sets also offer a matching wallpaper border which is another option to consider. You could paint the walls and then put a border up around the top of the room. If you want to put the border up around the middle of the room, you could paint the walls two colors that coordinate with the border. One color for the top half and another color for the bottom half.

You could also use faux painting techniques like sponging and ragging when painting the walls. Stenciling is another option you could consider. You can get the stencils and painting supplies you will need for these techniques at your local home improvement stores.

Murals are another option for the nursery room walls. Cute baby nursery murals can be purchased that stick right on to the wall like wallpaper. Wall mural decals are also an option. They are often available to match the bedding or theme you choose and you can just peel and stick them on the wall where you want them.

Another option is to paint a mural on the wall yourself or hire an artist to paint one for you. This will give you more realistic results than a wallpaper mural but it can certainly be a lot more expensive and time consuming than the other options.

Accessorizing the Baby Nursery Walls

Once you have your nursery walls painted or wallpapered, you get to decide how you want to decorate them. You can use nursery artwork that matches or compliments the theme you have chosen for the room. Wall hangings also look nice on a nursery room wall. Hanging letters that spell out the baby’s name or other words is also a popular idea. You may also want to hang some baby room shelves to put knick knacks such as piggy banks and figurines on.
