Baby Crib Safety
Baby crib safety is an important aspect of planning your baby nursery. When deciding on your baby’s crib, be sure to choose a model that meets the following baby crib safety standards:
* Slats should not be more than 2 3/8” apart to prevent the baby from getting stuck in between them.
* The baby mattress should fit tightly inside of the crib with no more than a 2” gap between the mattress and the side of the crib.
* If you choose a crib with a canopy or high posts, make sure that the posts are high enough that the baby will never be able to get their clothes caught on the post. This will prevent a choking hazard.
* Make sure the latches to lower the side can not be operated by a baby or small child.
* When lowered, the side should be several inches above the mattress to prevent the baby from rolling out.
* Never put bulky comforters, pillows, or stuffed animals in the crib. They could smother an infant.
* Make sure to purchase a sleep positioner. It is important to put infants to sleep on their backs and a sleep positioner prevents them from rolling over.
* Be sure that the crib is strong and can withstand the baby shaking it back and forth and jumping up and down in it when he or she is older.
* If you choose a crib that has casters on it, make sure they lock. When the baby gets bigger, this will prevent them from being able to shake the crib across the room and possibly injure themselves.
* Make sure that it has a smooth finish that will not chip.
Baby Crib Safety Standards were changed in 1986 so if you use a family heirloom for your baby's crib, it might not meet today's recommended safety standards. Also beware of cribs made before 1978, they may contain lead paint.
